Day 2, Saturday August 2, 2008 ---> Memphis again

Today was day 2 of the fabulous 2008 WUPP vacation!

Were still in Memphis, and the damn internet connection here in the hotel sucks bootie.
Cant detect the network in the room, so im sitting down in the lobby puttin this blog up.
Oh well, no biggie. Im going to make sure that ALL of the pictures from each day will be
posted up over at our PicasaWeb galleries. Im dating them by day, so i guess they will appear in backward order as i put more days up, later, ill put them back in the right order or something.

Anyway, we got up early, all of 830 am, got some free breakfast downstairs and then started our day. First we traveled to the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Hotel. For those of you that dont know, this is the place that the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr was killed. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take any photos inside the Museum, so we took some outside. Apparently not everyone was so impressed with the Museum.

The Museum is fascinating and FULL of information. It truly makes me sad that the human race has committed so many horrendous crimes based on race, nationality or sex. This monument is a testament to those who stood up in the face of ignorance and championed all that is right, at any cost.

It was crowded and hot, even inside the museum, but it was even hotter outside (got up over 100 in Memphis today!!!) Our next stop was to be the famous Sun Studios. Just a few blocks away, it took us more time driving around the place lookin for a spot to park than it did to actually get there (i think this is turning into a theme for our vacation actually!)

We took the tour (with about 55 other people) and learned about the amazing history of Sun and the birth of Rock n Roll. We listened to some of the very first recording of some pioneers of American Music (Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Ike Turner, Roy Orbison, etc etc) and we stood in the very places they stood when they recorded it. As a musician, I really really feel connection to this place, and it is amazing to me to stand right there, where those guys stood and rocked out!

Our next stop would be the Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art, but first, time for lunch. We went back downtown and managed to find a street spot to park, damn, was amazing, though it took at least 10 min before we found it!! We headed into the Peabody Place mall to have a bite to eat at the fancy ass Jillians. It was good, though there was too much ham in my potato soup...

The Belz Museum was one of the most amazing places I've ever been. So much beautiful and intricate carvings and art. This place completely blew our minds. Amanda took a LOT of pic, only a few of them will be here, so make sure you go over to the PicasaWeb Galleries to check out the rest of them.

After the Museum, we were pretty tired, but we managed to head back down to Beale Street for another round of drinks. We only managed to walk from one end to the other once, but we did stop in at least every other bar to have a drink. Fun times. We headed back to the hotel a bit early, but got some good views of the sun setting across the river as we headed back.

  1. Always wanted to go to Sun Studios to see some of the music history. I should have had you pick me up a t-shirt.

    The intricate carvings on the Asian art are pretty amazing.

    Where are the pics of Ms Zeno?

  2. Sorry Deanna- we didn't have a wide enough lens to capture the awesomeness that was Ms. Zeno. You'll just have to use your imagination...
