Day 5, Tuesday, August 5, 2005 --> New Orleans

Still in Orleans and having a GREAT time!
Woke up this morning and headed out in the truck (the first time ive driven it since we got here). We traveled across the Mississippi River out to Westwego, LA. There we checked out Westwego Swamp Boat Adventures.

First they do a little naturalist presentation. Josh showed us some of the animals they cared for at their location. Most were rescue animals, and the others they were helping breed to re-release back into the swamp to increase local numbers. Very cool.

Amanda even held the baby gator, it was pretty cool!

Then we got on the boat with Capt. Tom. He is a native to the swamp, even lives back in the bayou on a stilt house (for 20 years!). He knew a lot about the swamp and was a great tour guide.

we saw some boats in the harbor and some of the floodwall improvements they are doing to the bayou...

we also saw some cool trees, plants and birds..

oh yea, and we saw some gators...

our tour guide was throwing marshmallows into the water to get the gators to come up close to the boat. we saw a biggun (about 8 feet he said) going after a smaller gator (about 3 feet) who got to what he must have considered 'his' marshmallow...

the swamp tour was one of the coolest, best parts of the vacation so far, very fun, informative and just plain cool. we probably saw about 30 alligators in all, they came right up to the boat.

Next we went to Taco Bell and I had a most horrible experience. They made me the wrong burritos 3 different times... it was a bit frustrating, but not as frustrating as some of the others customers there!

We drove back to New Orleans and took ourselves on a self guided tour of the Garden District. We walked around and took pics of some of the cool, big, expensive houses in the rich neighborhood. We saw Nick Cage's house (formerly Anne Rices), we saw John Goodmans house (formerly Trent Reznors of NIN), we saw another of Anne Rices houses, saw the house where Jefferson Davis died (President of the Confederate States) saw the Manning house (home to 3 famous NFL quarterbacks) and on and on.

we even got to see John Goodmans dog, but we couldnt get him to come up to the fence so we could pet him, boo.

  1. Who knew that gators liked marshmallows? I heard they like human arms.

    Do you have any idea how much I love Trent Reznor??? John Goodman went to high school with Dave's dad so he's no big deal but Trent?!?!?! I LOVES Him!! Anne Rice used to write some great stuff before she got all spiritual and weird. I hate when then happens.
